When couples think about their wedding timeline, the ceremony and reception usually take center stage. But there’s one part of the day that quietly ties everything together—and that’s cocktail hour.

Often underestimated, cocktail hour is much more than the time between “I do” and dinner. It sets the initial tone, keeps guests happy, and starts your entire wedding day with a natural, effortless flow.

Cocktail Hour Keeps Guests Comfortable and Entertained

After your ceremony, guests are ready to celebrate—but they’re also ready for a drink and a bite to eat. Cocktail hour creates a welcoming transition where guests can relax, mingle, and enjoy themselves while the excitement of the ceremony settles into celebration mode.

Without it, guests may feel unsure of what to do next or become restless waiting for the reception to begin. A thoughtfully planned cocktail hour ensures everyone feels taken care of from the very beginning. It is a time for refreshments and a time to reconnect with old friends.

Here at Lavender on the Lake, guests congregate in our special tree nook. It is naturally shaded as the space is beneath an old water oak tree. Our LOTL custom built bar sits below along with 10 high top tables with black linens. Sometimes, couples choose to rent other linens. Appetizers are hand delivered plus we have had charcuterie set up by our local favorite Gather and Graze.

Having said all of this, we have had a few weddings where the couples have forgotten to add a water station and/or to serve water during cocktail hour. Living in Florida, this is something that cannot be skipped.

Pro Cocktail Hour Tip

Have a water/lemonade, tea station set up for easy access and refreshments to keep your guests comfortable and hydrated.

Cocktail Hour Gives You Time to Be Present (Without the Rush)

Cocktail hour is one of the only built-in moments of the day where you can pause and breathe. While your guests are enjoying themselves, you can take your time with photos, soak in the moment as newlyweds, and even sneak away for a few quiet minutes together.

*If you are getting married here, be sure to have your photographer scope things out to find some hidden gem photo spots!)

Many couples say that it is at this moment when the day finally feels real.

Pro Cocktail Hour Tip

Take a moment to soak it in by popping into one of the bridal suites.

I love this photo because it shows people sprawled out on the back of the property. Over by the cocktail space, there is a little Champagne Truck that was a unique touch!

Cocktail Hour Enhances the Guest Experience

A great cocktail hour isn’t just about drinks—it’s about creating an experience. Passed appetizers, signature cocktails, live music, or even live painters elevate the entire event and give your guests something memorable right from the start. We had one wedding last year when our couple hired a Mentalist who walked around wowing the guests with his mind games.

Another couple had a closed wall where guests walked up, decided which drink they would like, rang a bell, and it was handed to them through the hole by a gloved hand. How cool is that?

Cocktail Hour Allows for a Seamless Reception Transition

Behind the scenes, cocktail hour is essential for your vendor team. It provides time to:

  • Transition ceremony spaces into reception setups
  • Finalize table settings and décor
  • Coordinate timing for entrances, dinner, and speeches

Because of this buffer, your reception can begin smoothly and on time—without guests noticing any of the behind-the-scenes work.

When we created LOTL, we considered the in-between moments and thoughtfully planned our building accordingly. For example, we have doors that lead from the exterior into both the men and women’s bathrooms so that guests may use the restrooms without entering reception space. (BTW- are you looking for ideas on how to choose your wedding venue? If so, read here!)

Believe me, some will try to find their seat and put their things down, but we have a way to lock them out. Sometimes we do get complaints; we are trying to protect the overall “wow” factor as well as to ensure that all vendors are able to complete the set up. And we are all working on last minute details to ensure that the reception is perfect.

Cocktail Hour Sets the Tone for the Celebration Ahead

Cocktail hour acts as the bridge between the emotional moments of your ceremony and the high-energy celebration of your reception. Whether you envision something elegant and romantic or lively and upbeat, this hour helps establish the mood for the rest of the evening. Make it unique to you!
